Best Whitening Toothpaste for 2021
In 2020 there is plenty of whitening toothpaste available to us. So which are the best whitening toothpaste in Australia for 2020?
And which ones are a cut above the rest?
Here I look at which gives the best results, have the best value for money and which turn out to be a bit of a dud.
NOTE: I have no affiliation or incentives for using the following products and before each of the whitening products were tried, I followed the same process.
I ate breakfast and then proceeded to gargle a mouthful of coffee for 30 seconds and rinsed my mouth out with water for 10 seconds.
This ensured an accurate result and fair testing for each of the below products so you can rest assured that these reviews are honest, non-biased and accurate.
Read on to find out what brands and products will give you the best results for the best price…
Surprisingly, the most expensive toothpastes were not always the best.
Colgate 2 in 1 Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Coles
How much was it? $5.35
How much is in the tube? 130g
Easy to open/access? Yes.
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
No instructions with this product, but you simply need to flip the cap on the bottle (not in a tube) and squeeze to expel the toothpaste.
It is a little wetter and more liquid than most toothpastes so be mindful of this when coating the bristles of your toothbrush. This is because it combines toothpaste with a mouthwash.

Result: 3.5/5
Value for money: 4.5/5
Would you Recommend it to Friends and Family?
Yes. This toothpaste is a little more liquid than most others, even those in the same brand.
This is of course because the ‘2 in 1’ is in reference to the combination of a toothpaste and mouthwash which takes its form in a liquid gel.
Even so, it is a great product and gives really good results in a short period.
It is minty without being overpowering and whitens quite well in the short term, but in comparison to others it is not the best on the market, but probably one of the best in regards to the low cost.
You can feel it cleaning deeply while you brush and the included mouthwash leaves you with minty fresh breath.
There are cheaper and just as effective products but to forgo the need for an additional mouthwash, the Colgate 2 in 1 toothpaste and mouthwash combination product is a great buy.
You can see results in as little as a week, and for best results as with most toothpaste whitening products, use twice daily in the morning and evening.
Colgate Advanced Whitening Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Coles
How much was it? $7.00
How much is in the tube? 190g
Easy to open/access? Yes.
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
This item comes with no instructions, but it works just the same as any toothpaste you have used before, and you have probably had a Colgate brand at one point.

Would you Recommend it to Friends and Family?
Yes. Colgate Advanced Whitening Toothpaste gives a much better whitening effect than any other similar products in the same brand.
It is thicker than most toothpaste and has a strong minty taste. It contains whitening crystals which scrub your teeth thoroughly and provide added whitening power to the toothpaste itself.
This formula now has tartar control effects and this is certainly felt. You are promised visibly whiter teeth in 14 days and this period I feel is accurate.
I have used this product before and two weeks is quite achievable. I would use this product again and I feel that it is value for money especially if you plan on using it on a regular basis.
Afterwards, as well as being whiter, your mouth feels fresh and remains so for a long period in comparison to other toothpastes in a similar price bracket.
At $7 a tube it is a little pricey but not so much so that you would ultimately opt for a brand that is lesser.
There are cheaper brands that I feel are on par with Colgate Advanced Whitening, but I just feel personally like this gives a great mouthfeel post brushing and adds to your fresh breath, even more so if you are a regular mouthwash user.
Colgate Optic White High Impact Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Coles
How much was it? $10.00
How much is in the tube? 85g
Easy to open/access? Yes.
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
No instructions required! This tube is easily squeezable and the flip cap is simple to use.

Over other products of the same brand and lower cost, I would not recommend this.
There are cheaper and more effective options even in the Colgate brand.
Seeing as it brags about being one of the best whitening products on the market it certainly does not perform.
Even the Colgate Advanced toothpaste leaves you with a better overall effect and fresh breath for longer.
If you are looking for something that is either cheaper or effective many of the cheaper whitening products work better and are more cost effective too.
The Colgate website says that you can see results within 3 days, in the form of a visibly whiter smile, but in my experience, I would say it is more like a week or so before you see whiter teeth, this is of course with twice a day brushing.
It uses the added ingredient of hydrogen peroxide which is supposed to improve the whitening effect, but even so, it only matches similar whitening kinds of toothpaste and certainly does not surpass them.
It is also quite a small tube in comparison, at only 85g!
Macleans Whitening Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Woolworths
How much was it? $3.00
How much is in the tube? 170g
Easy to open/access? Yes.
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
No instructions but again none required. It is in an easy to use and a familiar tube with a flip top cap.

Would you Recommend it to Friends and Family?
Yes! Looking at the price, I was surprised that the Macleans brand was actually one of my favourites.
It left me with a minty fresh feeling in my mouth that remained for longer than any other products that I tried.
There are two types of multi-action kinds of toothpaste of this brand on the market and this one has the added whitening effect.
There is also sugar acid protection throw into this toothpaste. This is important as especially in our highly processed and modified diets in this day and age you may be ingesting a lot more sugar than you are aware of.
As well as having other negative side effects on our overall health, it can also damage our teeth.
Sugar is turned into bacteria inside of your mouth and this can be dangerous to the tooth enamel that protects your precious teeth.
You can really feel the difference with this toothpaste. It gives you a fresher feeling for longer and visibly whitened my teeth in less than a week, which is amazing!
Highly recommended and excellent price.
Oral B 3D White Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Coles
How much was it? $9.50
How much is in the tube? 130g
Easy to open/access? Yes.
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
There are instructions on the packaging, but they are not necessarily needed.
Apply liberally to the toothbrush and brush your teeth twice a day with this product.

Would you Recommend it to Friends and Family?
No. There are certainly better options out there.
Firstly, it says that the flavour is mint, but I can assure you that you will get more of a bubblegum taste, it is sweet and just feels like it should be marketed toward children rather than as an adult whitening toothpaste.
In saying this, I know that not everyone wants a blow-your-head-off minty flavour like me, I just feel like my mouth as a whole is fresher afterwards.
I do not want an overwhelmingly powerful mint taste, but something strong so it feels like I am actually freshening my breath rather than masking it for now. As it does not taste very minty it does not give you fresh breath for long.
The whitening aspect is decent, but nothing to rave about. It has a similar effect to the Colgate brand and seeing as it is so much more expensive than any of those that have been trialled, it does not seem like it is worthwhile.
This may work differently for others, but personally, it is not the best for me and although it did give results, about a week into use twice daily, as I said cheaper brands were equally or more so effective.
Pearl Drops Whitening Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Woolworths
How much was it? $4.99
How much is in the tube? 110g
Easy to open/access? Yes.
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
The same as most other kinds of toothpaste, no instructions really needed.
Use twice daily is certainly recommended.

Would you Recommend it to Friends and Family?
Yes! Pearl Drops Extra White, with its four-part cleaning system does wonders and it is so cheap! At less than $5 per tube, it is easily one of the cheapest and also a highly effective product.
I saw results within the week and as with other brands used twice daily. You can tell that it has additional whitening ingredients, the brands says that there are three stain removal ingredients within the toothpaste.
In saying this, it is gentle on the teeth and emits any harsh chemicals, as other whitening products have.
It does not keep your breath as fresh and the mint flavour is quite light, so not exactly my kind of toothpaste and I will probably not use it again personally, but family and friends of mine who have tried it previously find that it works well for them.
It is worth giving a go, especially at such a low cost.
Sensodyne Repair and Protect Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Coles
How much was it? $11.00
How much is in the tube? 100g
Easy to open/access? No. Screw top cap makes it difficult to close and keep fresh after a few uses unless you remember to clean it thoroughly after every use!
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
It is simple to use, a paste like any other. Apply liberally to your toothbrush and lather well over all your teeth for a nice, even clean.

Would you Recommend it to Friends and Family?
No. I was a bit disappointed.
I know that Sensodyne products are quite highly acclaimed in the market, especially of course for those who suffer from sensitive teeth. It did not live up to the name as I saw it.
The taste was average, not very minty at all, but I assume this may be because of the ingredient added to make it gentle on teeth.
Perhaps mint aggravates sensitive teeth so this may be the reasoning behind the taste but not having sensitive teeth myself I do not know.
It is expensive and although I did see results with just over a week of use, other cheaper products I have used gave results in a shorter period, and of course, were more cost effective in the long run.
It did not leave your breath fresh and the tube was significantly smaller than most others, which were at around the 110-190g mark.
If you have sensitive teeth and find that nothing soothes them, give this a try but otherwise, I would opt for a cheaper option which will probably have similar effects.
The screw top cap is not great either, a design flaw of sorts, and can get clogged up if not cleaned after use. This is simply a hassle and why I prefer the flip top caps on all of the other toothpaste brands.
White Glo Bio-Enzyme Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Coles
How much was it? $3.50
How much is in the tube? 150g
Easy to open/access? Yes.
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
Easy to understand and not necessary.
The easy to squeeze tube is used to coat the bristles of your toothbrush and make sure to apply a lot for the best results.

Yes! The White Glo products as a whole are great! I was not disappointed with any, even the more natural versions. In fact, they pleasantly surprised me.
They were one of the cheapest products and they are also some of the larger tubes on the market.
The Bio-Enzyme toothpaste product contains an enzyme which is said to remove stains from the enamel of your teeth.
It worked really well, on par with some of the other brands I was impressed with so far. Results were evident within the first week of use twice daily.
White Glo Charcoal Detox Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Coles
How much was it? $3.50
How much is in the tube? 150g
Easy to open/access? Yes.

Easy to understand and use in general. Use similarly to any other toothpaste.

Would you Recommend it to Friends and Family?
Yes. I am a big fan of charcoal tooth whitening products and this White Glo version certainly delivers!
I have used the charcoal tooth whitening powders before and they have given great results.
White Glo Charcoal Detox Toothpaste is a great alternative to the powders, which taste not very nice and if not washed out properly can leave your teeth feeling gritty throughout the day.
The taste is quite a lot milder and sweeter than your traditional mint tubes of toothpaste, but not so much that it does not act to freshen your breath.
It comes out in a grey colour, which can be off-putting, but the flavour is so much better than it looks and for the price you are really getting your value for money, especially when you compare with other activated charcoal products on the market.
White Glo Coconut Oil Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Coles
How much was it? $4.00
How much is in the tube? 150g
Easy to open/access? Yes.
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
Easy to understand and effective. Simple to use and when used twice daily as instructed it gives good results.

Would you Recommend it to Friends and Family?
Yes, yes, yes! I love all of the White Glo products and they are truly the best value for money.
You can certainly see why it is one of the number one whitening brands on the market.
White Glo has a great variety of products to suit different people and I myself do love a more natural product, which they provide in two forms.
The coconut toothpaste tastes great! It still has that minty, fresh feeling without all of the taste. It is a great alternative to highly chemical products on the market, with ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide.
You really feel the difference and although it does not show results as quickly as the other products of the same brand, and some of the different brands too, results when used twice a day can be seen within a two week period and you will feel the difference within your mouth too.
Highly recommended product and for $4? I say why not!
White Glo PURE and Natural Toothpaste
Where was it purchased from? Coles
How much was it? $4.00
How much is in the tube? 120g
Easy to open/access? Yes
Instructions required or simple to understand without any?
No need for instructions, but they are there for you if you want them.
Use twice daily will have your teeth looking whiter in no time.

Would you Recommend it to Friends and Family?
Yes. Like I have mentioned many times over, White Glo has amazed me as far as whitening toothpastes go.
Having natural alternatives opens so many doors and although I did not expect them to work as well I can honestly say that I am surprised by the results.
It is not so minty and even compared to the coconut version, it does not leave your breath as fresh which is a drawback for me.
But, on the other hand, whiter teeth can be seen within the same two week period and if you want a more natural product this could be the best option for you. It is also just as cheap as many of the products in the brand and certainly worth a go.
Conclusion
So, the brands that I would recommend, for both value, whitening and freshening are the White Glo products. This extends to the PURE Natural and Charcoal versions in particular.
Others which are great value for money if you can not get your hands on or have tried these already are the Colgate 2 in 1, Advanced Whitening and Maclean’s products.
The remaining are either much more expensive or simply do not work as effectively in regards to whitening.
I will reinforce that I am under no obligation to promote any of these products and submit my honest and unbiased opinion.
If you struggle with finding the right whitening products White Glo is a great place to start!
